Chapter Twelve

Colin showed up at Will’s house earlier than he normally would. He thought he’d surprise Will, who shouldn’t be off for another hour or so. He’d brought steaks to grill out since there was only so much warm weather left to be squeezed out of the year before Washington State got the memo that fall had arrived. He thought maybe they could have steak and beer and sit out on Will’s back porch, which overlooked a pond, enjoying the balmy air. Then maybe they’d celebrate taking the new step in their sort-of relationship.

But Colin’s plans were dashed when he pulled up to Will’s house to find Will’s cruiser in the front yard and Will on the front porch, sitting on the porch swing with a beer. When Colin got out of his car, smiling, he realized Will was scowling at him. “Hey,” he called as he wandered up to the front steps. Will just stared, eyes hard. Colin froze. He’d never seen Will ever look so rigid, eyes unreadable.

“Will?”

“You can go home.”

“What?” Colin was confused. Beyond confused.

“You can go home, Colin.”

“Will, what’s going on?”

“I don’t have anything to say to you. If and when I do, it’ll be from my attorney.”

“Wh-what? Attorney? Will, I don’t understand.” Colin took a step onto the porch, but Will, with a quickness one wouldn’t assume the man’s large frame possessed, was in Colin’s face.

“I said go… The fuck… Home.”

Colin reached for Will, but Will swatted his hands. Then Colin finally saw an emotion trying its hardest to hide in the depths of Will’s blue eyes. He was devastated. Colin didn’t know why, but the man’s eyes looked like he could cry any minute, but damn if Will’s face wasn’t stone solid.

“Will, what happened?”

“I don’t know why it matters. We were just fucking around anyway. Couldn’t be seen in public, had to hide from your mean old daddy. Heaven forbid I come to your house. It’s cool. I get it.” Will turned his back on Colin, and Colin’s heart stuttered, stopped, and shattered with Will’s final “Good-bye, Colin. Leave the fucking key on the porch before you leave.” Then Will went inside and shut the door, deadbolt noisily clicking in place. Colin knew even Will didn’t have a key for the dead bolt, only locking the push lock on the front door when leaving, so there was no use trying to follow him in.

Colin’s world was rocked. He didn’t understand how they went from Will meeting Colin’s mom and giving Colin a key, being something close to happy, to being just a fuck. Colin placed the key under the welcome mat in front of the door and made his way back to the car.

Colin had always known their relationship might not stand the test of time; it was fragile. He hadn’t realized just how much he’d obviously hurt Will by hiding him, but Colin hadn’t realized how much he would hurt when everything was over, when the dust had settled and the ruins of the relationship could be seen for all its scarred and damaged pieces littering the ground.
